Montego King Released
Montego King was arrested in 2005 for a self-defense firing of a gun that he picked up on the floor of an apartment where he was coming to get a stereo he had loaned to someone. Instead of the stereo being handed to him, the occupants started firing shots at him. Sadly, he shot and killed a young man who was there. In Forsyth County, the prosecutor was known to seek and get the death penalty on murder charges. Claudia had been working with Montego and she was called in by the defense team to convince him to take a plea rather than go to trial where he was almost certain to be convicted and sentenced to death. Montego had a great lawyer, Duane Bryant, and an excellent mitigation specialist, Ann Doherty, and the team was eventually able to convince him to take the plea. He was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years, and during that time he took courses, was very positive in his outlook, and, as a result, he had an excellent prison record. He was released on parole on February 19, 2023, and will serve the remaining two years on parole. Montego will able to participate as a returning citizen in his community and to be with his two children and other family. Montego wanted Claudia to be there to walk him out and she had tickets to fly to North Carolina but the constant snowstorms finally forced her to postpone the trip until April, when they will finally meet up.
